The traditional biblical narratives reference the earthly promised land as one flowing with milk and honey. It is in this sense that we recognize how apt the statement actually is, for we come to Harmony Acres to attain both of these foods in abundance. As we steward the land and serve members of the Ministry, the beehives and the cattle continue to increase exponentially. In honoring God and the land, we hope to witness an overflow of nutrient-rich raw milk and raw honey.
Secondarily, if someone tells us to taste something, we are being invited into an experience. Our taste buds will translate and deliver information to us about the object we are tasting via those apertures of sense perception. We may not like the resultant flavor, or perhaps it's a brand new favorite, but in either case, the invitation was still put forward which led to the experience. In this respect it is simply a call to action, an opportunity to have a taste of something. Oftentimes, if we desire to try something out before we actually experience it, we might say that we're just getting a taste for things. When we are asked to taste something in this way, it's akin to the visual invitation of getting a glimpse of some experience which is yet to come, though it is still not the experience itself.
The essential meaning;
Which brings us to the more essential meaning of this phrase. When we the people of the nation turn from our error, becoming virtuous and upright in heart, while cultivating godly character and strong moral conscience, God promises to heal the land (which is the inhabited world and relationships around us). This is an earthly and temporal land of promise, which ultimately reflects that heavenly and eternal land of Promise, a land that is above and transcendent. We honor that higher land when our actions conform to the elevated good that awaits us. It is in this way that we receive a mere "taste" of that which is to come, for nothing in our fleeting earthly existence can compare to that truly Promised Land, where death is swallowed up in victory.
And so food is nothing more than fuel for our human lives, designed to establish and upkeep healthy functioning bodies. It is therefore only a means to an end and certainly not an end in itself. What is that end? From a Christ-centered perspective, it is the ultimate consummation of all that is good, unfurled into a state of unending perfection where evil (the privation of good) and decay are no longer apprehended. Such could rightly be called a new beginning then, for therein the actions of Love are all-triumphant, opening up into an unimaginable rest and journey of discovery.
The production of food through Harmony Acres is a tool to nourish us along the way to that new beginning as we serve God, serve others, develop strong moral character, and steward temporal resources in preparation for initiation into that eternal heritage and heavenly birthright.
Thank you for walking alongside us as we too seek to taste the Promised Land.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
(Psalms 34:8 NKJV)
